What odds would you give an underfunded NASCAR race team with a beaten and battered race car on the high banking super speedway of f Daytona? Not very good right? Well take that same team, car and race track, but add in the heart and passion of a champion and the odds increase significantly. They actually go up all the way to Victory Lane! Kurt Busch drove the Phoenix Racing Chevy to the win Friday night in the Subway Jalapeno 250 at Daytona.
Kurt had the #1 Chevy up front all night until an accident late in the race left Kurt’s car beaten and battered. The team came into the pits 6 times to fix damages on the car and would never give up.”It’s just a matter of putting yourself in position to win,” Busch said. “Tonight, we overcame our damage. We could have folded, but these guys jumped into action and didn’t give up.”
Kurt was leading the pack to the checkered flag when everyone started making their moves to take the lead from him. Kurt showed why he is a NASCAR champion though and held everyone off for the win. “I don’t know much about anything else. You get caught up in marketing or PR and everything else that goes along with it, but you’ve got to do all the steps in this day and age. I keep saying I grew up 30 years too late, and I still haven’t grown up, even though I’m 33. But back in the 80s, that’s what this team reminds me of. It’s family. And you go hard, or you go home.”
Nick Harrison, Crew Chief on the #1 Phoenix Racing Chevy, talked about the hit they took and the end of the race. “We did take a heavy shot in the left rear right in front of the tire, killed the quarter panel and all the crush panels. The S975 held up like a Sherman tank! The charging system quit (alternator cooling) with 10 laps to go and Kurt shut everything down to conserve some reserve capacity. The crew was worried but, I knew the “real” numbers and that we could run over half the race off of those batteries. He (Kurt Busch) made moves through the field like a surgeon, but without the best stuff available it would have been short lived. Thank you and your guys for fixing our electrical issues. It’s great to run the A1 parts like that S975 instead of the recycled suspect look alike. Our congratulations goes out to everyone at XS POWER! By the way, I load tested it afterwards, still 12.75 volts of charge and north of 500 Amps @ 9.6 volts with a VAT40. That’s a sharp scalpel in anyone’s book.
